The image of someone sitting alone at home, gazing out a window devoid of hope, haunts. It’s heartbreaking to think of lonely people of all ages, and the elderly starved of conversations and connections. So I am waving the banner - Loneliness Brings Us Together, Not Apart and starting a culture-changing movement, so No One should suffer loneliness alone.
Two decades ago, there were free Social Services day centers designed for the elderly and those who found it challenging to socialise. (Today you may find one or two locally that usually range from about £30 to £50 for a few hours.)(See below for Prama Care Dorset's cheaper activities.)
SENIOR LIFE NEED NOT BE LONELY
We have sown seeds as 6 Chitter Chatter Clubs in various care homes, (and hopefully 10 more) have an open-door policy, inviting the public to come in and share joyful moments with the residents.
THERE IS NO COST
Tea, cakes, and sometimes entertainment are provided. You’ll not only experience the warmth and care surrounding you but also get a glimpse into these wonderful places and other events which you will also be invited to return freely to. These care facilities resemble five-star hotels without the pretentiousness and do not smell of wee.
KINDNESS IS EVERYWHERE
The kindest staff, chosen for their compassion, empathy and most importantly their sense of humour will leave you feeling seen, heard and valued, not to mention laughing. They’ll kindly invite you to ‘Don’t dine alone, Free fish and chip Fridays, Cheese and Wine events, Arts and Crafts workshops, games, Knit and Natter, Men’s Club and more I assure you. If you don’t find yourself laughing while you’re there, I’ll gladly refund your tea money.
(The events are free, you pay for your own transport only.)
TRY THEM OUT
It is a great opportunity to have company, fun and a look around to quell the stereotypes in your mind, also eliminate fears of entering and for family too, who might want to come and get the feel of the place for future decision making.
The joke ‘that once you are in, they will never let you go.’
Isn't true.
They have waiting lists.
WHAT HAVE YOU GOT TO LOSE?
Go for a cuppa, make some new friends, leave loneliness behind for a few hours, and try something new.
I dare you!
5* without the pomp and ceremony.
The three most important organs in your body are your heart, lungs, and thighs. As human being's we need to socialise. Loneliness is the body’s way of telling you, you need human connection.
